Essay: Playing Santa Claus at the Grace Shelter – Khabar 2009
Published in 2009, Playing Santa Claus at the Grace Shelter is a personal essay about volunteering at a women’s shelter during the holiday season. What begins as a simple act of giving becomes a reflection on poverty, privilege, migration, and the unexpected ways memory follows us across continents. Through encounters with women rebuilding their lives, the essay explores compassion, dignity, and the uneasy questions that arise when we recognize ourselves in the lives of others.
Rediscovering this essay years later, I am struck by how many of the questions that would eventually shape Almost Light and Grammar of Daughters were already present.
